Does God See Me? What “El Roi” Means When You Feel Invisible
Does God See Me When I Feel Unseen?
Have there been moments when you’ve wondered: “Does God see me?”
Moments where you feel ‘unseen’?
Like everyone else is being noticed, celebrated, and blessed
but somehow, you’re being overlooked?
Maybe by people.
Maybe in your work.
or even in your relationships.
And you’re questioning, Does God even notice, hear or care?
Because sometimes…
it feels like you’re invisible.
If that’s you, I want to speak directly to your heart today:
You are not invisible. You are fully seen. El-Roi: the God who sees me, sees you!.
What Does El Roi Mean in the Bible?
Let’s talk about the woman who gave God the name El-Roi in Genesis 16.
Her name was Hagar.
She wasn’t the main character, she wasn’t chosen, she wasn’t in control of her situation.
She was Sarah and Abraham’s maidservant.
Sarah grew impatient while waiting on God’s promise of a child. She told Abraham to sleep with Hagar so they could have a child through her.
After Hagar became pregnant, tension grew between her and Sarah, and eventually…
Hagar fled into the wilderness…
alone, rejected, pregnant, and afraid.
And this where the story shifts.
Because in her lowest moment, God meets her there
Not in comfort, but in the wilderness.
And He speaks to her.
El Roi: The God Who Sees Me
After this encounter, Hagar gives God a name:
El Roi. The God who sees.
“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’” Genesis 16:13
Not a God who just watches or observes from a distance.
But a God who sees… deeply, personally, intentionally.
She was a woman overlooked by people…
yet fully seen by God.
And what’s powerful about this moment is this:
God didn’t wait for her to come back.
He met her where she was.
In her pain.
In her confusion.
and on the run.
God saw her.
He spoke to her.
He comforted and guided her.
What’s more, He gave her a promise to carry into her future
She had been running from her pain, but she couldn’t outrun God.
What This Means for You
This isn’t just Hagar’s story.
It’s an answer to a question many of us carry:
Does God see me?
And the answer is yes.
Sometimes, like Hagar, we want to run from our struggles. Maybe the pressure feels too heavy. Maybe our hearts feel too broken.
However, God may be asking us to stay and trust in Him to bring restoration or victory. Alternatively, He may be gently calling us to step away and heal.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
We should strive to stay connected to Him: through prayer, worship, fellowship and His Word.
When we stop tuning in to God’s voice, we risk veering off the path He’s lovingly planned for us.
Just like God saw Hagar, He sees you too:
– When you’re lost, He sees you.
– When you cry secret tears, He sees you.
– When you feel invisible, unloved, or unworthy, He sees you.
And here’s the truth we often miss:
Just because you feel unseen… doesn’t mean you are.
My Story: When I Felt Unseen
As I was preparing this post, the Holy Spirit reminded me of a moment in my life when I felt completely unseen.
It was 2014. I had just started a new job as a newly qualified pharmacist. After only six months, I was unfairly dismissed.
Driving home that day, heartbroken and confused, I remember crying out to God:
“You could have prevented this!”
“You can do anything. Why did You let this happen?”
“That’s it. I’m not going to church this weekend. And You can’t make me!”
Ever felt like that?
When I accepted the job, I knew I couldn’t commute from home every day. So I found a house share nearby and moved in with a lady named Annalisa.
We barely spoke. The both of us were busy, and I was often away on weekends.
That evening following the dismissal, unaware she was home, I was sobbing on my bedroom floor.
Suddenly, I heard a gentle knock at the door.
“Simi? Are you okay?”
Annalisa stepped in and saw me crying. After taking in what was happening, she knelt beside me. She hugged me and asked if she could pray with me.
I didn’t even know she was a Christian.
But in that moment, through her prayer, I felt peace, calm, and an overwhelming sense of love.
Afterward, she invited me to her church. (And rebellious me, who had planned to boycott church, couldn’t believe what I was hearing!)
But I said yes.
That church service? It did something to me.
The worship, the Word, the warmth, I had to hold back tears the entire time.
Later that week, during house fellowship, two church leaders prayed for me.
In that moment, I felt God whisper to my heart:
“I saw this coming. I knew you’d feel rejected. So I placed you in a home where you’d be reminded of My love.”
That same Sunday, I applied for one job, and I got it.
God is faithful!!!!
He saw me then. He sees me now. And friend, He sees you too.
How Jesus Shows That God Sees You
If you’ve ever questioned whether God sees you…look at Jesus
Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently noticed the people others ignored.
- The woman at the well
- The woman with the issue of blood
- Zacchaeus in the tree
He didn’t just see crowds.
He saw individuals.
And ultimately…
The cross is the greatest proof that God sees you.
Not just in general, but personally.
What To Do When You Feel Unseen?
So what do you do when you feel this way?
Feeling unseen is real.
But it doesn’t have to define you.
Here are a few things that have helped me:
1. Be honest with God
Tell Him exactly how you feel. Hagar did.
2. Don’t let feelings become beliefs
Feelings are real—but they’re not always true.
3. Anchor yourself in truth
Return to what God says, not what your emotions suggest.
4. Let God define your worth
Not people, your situations or outcomes.
"...and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5
This verse reminds us that not every thought we think is true.
In fact, every thought telling you you’re unloved, unimportant, or overlooked –
It’s not from God.
So when those thoughts come, pause and ask yourself:
“Is this thought aligned with what God says about me?”
If the answer is no, replace it with truth:
- “I’m not important” → “I am important. God created me for a reason.”
- “No one sees me” → “God sees me. He knows every detail of my life.”
These aren’t just nice affirmations—
they are rooted in Scripture,
and they help realign your thinking with truth.
And if you’ve ever felt unseen, you’ll know this doesn’t just stay as a feeling…
it starts to affect how you think.
When Feeling Unseen Affects Your Thoughts
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing the truth…
it’s holding onto it when your feelings are telling you something else.
- “Maybe I don’t matter”
- “Maybe I’m not enough”
- “Maybe I’m being overlooked for a reason”
And before you realise it…those thoughts begin to spiral.
Before long, you’re stuck in a loop of negative thinking—
mentally exhausted, trying to make sense of it all.
And if I’m honest, that’s been part of my own journey too.
I’ve known the truth…
but learning to hold onto it daily
has been the real challenge.
That’s one of the reasons I created my journal.
Not just to reflect, but to help you:
- identify the thoughts that come from feeling unseen
- replace them with truth
- build a habit of renewing your mind
Because freedom doesn’t come from hearing truth once…
it comes from returning to it—again and again.
Does God See Me? (What to Remember)
Yes. God sees you.
He sees your hidden struggles.
He sees what others overlook.
If you’re in a season of waiting, heartbreak, or wondering where God is…
Please hear this:
You are fully seen and deeply loved by El-Roi.
He hasn’t missed a moment of your story.
He is with you in the waiting, the weeping, and the wondering.
And He is not done writing your story.
Worship While You Wait
Has God seen you in the past?
Or are you in a season of waiting right now?
If so, take a few minutes today to worship Him.
When we worship God in our waiting, it’s a sign of trust.
When we worship Him for His past faithfulness, it’s a sign of gratitude.
This song reminds me that God sees me:
“Great Is” by Elevation Worship
Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for seeing me in every season, through the highs and lows, the moments of joy and the times of despair.
Help me to trust that You are near, even when I feel invisible.
Remind me that Your love surrounds me, even when I can’t always perceive it.
May I find comfort in knowing that, regardless of my circumstances, Your presence is a constant source of strength and hope.
Give me patience as I navigate life’s challenges, believing that You have a purpose for each experience.
Amen.
