El-Roi: The God Who Sees You

Have you ever felt unseen?

Like everyone else is being noticed, celebrated, and blessed—but somehow, you’ve been forgotten?

Maybe you’ve prayed your heart out. Maybe you’ve cried silent tears. And still—nothing seems to shift. You’re left wondering:

Does God even notice?
Does He hear?
Does He care?

If that’s you, I want to speak directly to your heart today:

You are not invisible. You are not forgotten. You are fully seen—by El-Roi, the God who sees.

Speaking Truth Over Lies

📖 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 10:5

This verse reminds us that not every thought we think is true.

In fact, every thought telling you you’re unloved, unimportant, or overlooked?

❌ It’s not from God.

So when those thoughts come, pause and ask yourself:

“Is this thought aligned with what God says about me?”
If the answer is no—replace it with truth:

✅ “I’m not important” → “I am important—God created me for a reason.”
✅ “No one sees me” → “God sees me. He knows every detail of my life.”

These affirmations don’t just sound nice—they are rooted in Scripture, and they reframe your reality to align with God’s.

Hagar: The One Who Named God

Let’s talk about the woman who first gave God the name El-Roi in Genesis 16.

Her name was Hagar—Sarah and Abraham’s maidservant. Sarah grew impatient while waiting on God’s promise. She told Abraham to sleep with Hagar so they have a child through her.

As a result, after Hagar became pregnant, she began to despise Sarah—and Sarah mistreated her in return.

Eventually, the situation became unbearable.

So Hagar fled—alone, rejected, pregnant, and afraid.

And right there, in her lowest moment, God met her.

📖 “She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’”
— Genesis 16:13

At that time, Hagar wasn’t important in the eyes of society. She was a servant, a woman, a foreigner.

Yet she became the first person in the Bible to name God.

The name she gave Him? 

El-Roi — “The God who sees me.”

God saw her.
He spoke to her.
He comforted and guided her.

What’s more, He gave her a promise to carry into her future

She had been running from her pain, but she couldn’t outrun God.

He Sees You Too

Sometimes, like Hagar, we want to run from our struggles. Maybe the pressure feels too heavy. Maybe our hearts feel too broken.

However, God may be asking us to stay and endure. Alternatively, He may be gently calling us to step away and heal.

Either way, the key is staying connected to Him—through prayer, worship, fellowship and His Word.

When we stop tuning in to God’s voice, we risk veering off the path He’s lovingly planned for us.

Just like God saw Hagar, He sees you too:

✅ When you’re lost—He sees you.
✅ When you cry secret tears—He sees you.
✅ When you feel invisible, unloved, or unworthy—He sees you.

My Story: When I Felt Unseen

As I was preparing this post, the Holy Spirit reminded me of a moment in my life when I felt completely unseen.

It was 2014. I had just started a new job as a newly qualified pharmacist. After only six months, I was unfairly dismissed.

Driving home that day, heartbroken and confused, I remember crying out to God:

“You could have prevented this!”
“You can do anything—why did You let this happen?”
“That’s it. I’m not going to church this weekend. And You can’t make me!”

When I accepted the job, I knew I couldn’t commute from home every day. So I found a house share and moved in with a lady named Annalisa.

We barely spoke—both of us were busy, and I was often away on weekends.

That evening, unaware she was home, I was sobbing on my bedroom floor.

Suddenly, I heard a gentle knock at the door.

“Simi? Are you okay?”

Annalisa stepped in and saw me crying. After taking in what was happening, she knelt beside me. She hugged me and asked if she could pray with me.

I didn’t even know she was a Christian.

But in that moment, through her prayer, I felt peace, calm, and an overwhelming sense of love.

Afterward, she invited me to her church. (And rebellious me—who had planned to boycott church—couldn’t believe what I was hearing!)
But I said yes.

That church service? It did something to me.
The worship, the Word, the warmth—I had to hold back tears the entire time.

Later that week, during house fellowship, two church leaders prayed for me.

I felt God whisper to my heart:

“I saw this coming. I knew you’d feel rejected. So I placed you in a home where you’d be reminded of My love.”

That same Sunday, I applied for one job, and I got it.

God is faithful.

He saw me then. He sees me now. And friend—He sees you too.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for seeing me in every season—through the highs and lows, the moments of joy and the times of despair. Help me to trust that You are near, even when I feel invisible. Remind me that Your love surrounds me, even when I can’t always perceive it.

May I find comfort in knowing that, regardless of my circumstances, Your presence is a constant source of strength and hope. Give me patience as I navigate life’s challenges, believing that You have a purpose for each experience.
